As Joey and I continue to talk/debate the idea of getting another dog, I’ve started to do some research into local animal rescues. The people who work for these organizations truly have hearts of gold. I made a quick visit to the Washington Animal Rescue League last night, and when I got into my car to leave I started crying. I couldn’t help it! Those sweet doggie faces just look at you yearning for love. Luckily, there were a lot of dogs with pink slips next to their cages which meant there was an application in to adopt them and they would soon be on their way to their forever homes.
After talking with Joey about some of the dogs I saw at WARL, we sort of came to the conclusion that we’re a lab household through and through. That’s not to say if the right mutt came along, we wouldn’t consider other options, but we need to be diligent about picking a dog that will be as equally loving, sweet and friendly as our
first born Moose. We have to consider Moose, our families (who often help out!) and the possibility of kids down the road. It’s a big decision.
In further researching, I came across the Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac, which could be a great resource for us. If you have time, and a place where you can cry without getting caught, read the story of Max – a precious little guy who was hit by a car – and the amazing people who banded together to save his life.
For as much bad as there is out there in the world, there’s a whole lot of people doing a whole lot of really good things – doing good for animals in need is just one example. Your D-Spot PSA today is this – as you hit the stores searching for the perfect Christmas gifts to give, or as you make your own wish-list, take a minute to think of a way to donate to a charity of your choice or volunteer your time. Find a way to give back. Something that seems like a small gesture to you, can make a big difference to someone or something else.
